Overview

                           

     Montague Island is situated just 9km offshore from the picturesque south coast village of Narooma which is an approximately 4 hour drive from Sydney. During the winter and spring months Montague Island plays host to more than 1500 Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals.

 

            These seals spend their days sunning themselves on the rocks or frolicking in the shallows close to shore. The seals are quite inquisitive and often approach divers in vast zooming swarms before performing all manner a crazy aquabatics. There is little need to venture deeper than 15 meters to interact with the seals. However, the shelving terrain below the surface allows easy access to deeper water for those divers who wish to go and do a little exploring. The crazy antics of the seals make it difficult to ignore them though. The island is also quite large and so it can offer a large variety of dive sites suitable to the weather conditions.

                        

            Situated close to the island is the wreck of the 800 tonne collier Lady Darling which sank in 1880. The wreck lay undisturbed until it�s discovery in 1996. A heritage order was immediately placed on the wreck and strict mooring procedures are enforced to maintain the condition of the wreck and the relics it contains. It's encrusted in colourful anemones, corals and sponges and is a wonderful dive.

            During the months of September and October humpback whales pass between the mainland and Montague Island during their southern migration so encounters are common during the trip to and from the island.
 
            There's plenty to do above the water as well. Narooma itself is quite has several scenic walks and a number of cafes and pubs. The nearby village of Tilba is also a mecca for heritage style arts and handicrafts as well as local produce such as cheeses and preserves.

Minimum certification required to join this trip - Open water Diver.  Divers must bring Certification Card with them and it is recommended for you to bring your Log Book as well.

The minimum Certification level required to join most PRO DIVE Sydney weekend trips is a PADI Openwater Diver (or alternative agency equivalent). There are however some trips that require a higher level of certification (and/or diver experience) due to the diving environment you will be entering (eg deeper diving beyond 18m, cavern diving or wreck diving) and you are advised to check these required levels prior to booking your place. If you are including a specialty course in conjunction with this trip, please also check the minimum certification level required to commence the course, and whether you are required to supply any specialised equipment of your own for the program.
