About This Trip
After a 2.5 hour drive from Sydney, you arrive at the beautiful area of Port Stephens, often called the ‘ blue water paradise’ , on over 19 miles of clean, white, sandy beaches. Nelson Bay is a coastal resort town with so much to see and do above and below the water line. The diving and snorkelling here is exceptional. Just east of the bay is the tiny promontory of Fly Point aquatic reserve with prolific marine life and another superb site is just off the coast at Broughton Island with such outstanding features as the ‘Looking Glass’ - a split that runs through the middle of the island crowded with marine life.
Dive Sites
The Oakland - Boat Dive 20 - 27 metres
A 398 ton, 46m long steamer is lying at 27m just 1km north of Cabbage Tree Island on a clean sandy bottom. It is still intact with a large range of fish life consisting of port jackson sharks, wobbegongs and huge schools of fish.
The Looking Glass - Boat Dive 5 - 26 meters
A spectacular dive - swim though a narrow channel in the middle of the island and you’ll discover a great hideaway for a huge variety of fish. The sheer walls are covered with bait fish, sponges and patrolled by large black rays and grey nurse sharks.
Halifax Park - Shore Dive 3 - 20 metres
Beautiful sponge gardens, extensive schools of luderick, bream and mullet which are most active in the shallower waters in the later afternoon as the resident dolphins feed.
Fly Point - Shore Dive 3 - 16 metres
The sponge gardens host large schools of bream and mullet. Further down you will find a range of nudi’s, decorator crabs, pipefish and seahorses as well as school bannerfish, pineapple fish, wrasse, and wobbegong sharks. Great for macro photography and night diving.
